At the Tianyi Library in Ningbo. This library is the oldest private library in China, and houses over 300,000 volumes with 80,000 being rare books. It was built in 1561 during the Ming dynasty by an official who collected local books and was gifted many copies by friends. The family has been able to restore the library and preserve the books within.
Donuts from Best Bite, anyone??
Ningbo at night! This view across the river looks to the Laowai Tan district, aka the expat district. Ningbo is great in the evening and the weather is perfect. People also fly kites at night that light up with neon, so they kind of look like UFO’s or fairies in the sky.
A factory we visited in Yiwu, a city in Zhejiang. Yiwu is essentially the “factory” capital of China, and produces much of the low-technology goods. It’s a very entrepreneurial town, and is home to the largest wholesale B2B mall in the world. We visited a factory that manufactured stuffed animals for big name companies like Mattel, Tyco, etc.
The factory and working conditions were very clean, to my surprise. I was also kind of surprised that stuffed animals are sewn by hand - their factory floors weren’t very big at all. I asked the company owner where he saw the business growing. He stated he desired to get into more high technology manufacturing, so he can add more value for their clients.
Thought I’d post the view from our apartment on the 22nd floor. You can see all of Ningbo! Can’t see the river though. : )
The view from my new home in Ningbo! Our apartment is on the 22nd floor! Oh also, I’m an English teacher with Cambridge University’s English Language Training Center.
Yeah, I work for Cambridge University.
Some lovely pictures from around the West Lake in Hangzhou. Unfortunately it was misty and rainy, so we couldn’t see a whole lot…
West Lake is famous for a love story in traditional Chinese culture. Called the Legend of the White Snake, it tells the tale of a snake turned human who was in love with a young man. A monk, who believed that demons and humans could never be in love, pursued the white snake across many centuries, and eventually separated the two lovers and imprisoned the white snake in the Lifeng Pagoda on the West Lake
Xitang is a traditional water town in Zhejiang, the province below Shanghai. It’s populated with these canal towns. A bit touristy, but the alleyways and canals were beautiful. Xitang is most famous for its snail skewers.
